San Bernardino, Inyo, Mono County Science & Engineering Fair (SIMSEF) 2022 and the
Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) 2022

On March 17, 2022, our President, Varun Srivastava, received the Gold Medal at the San Bernadino, Inyo, and Mono County Science & Engineering Fair as well as the Regeneron Biomedical Science Award, the Mu Alpha Theta Award, the American Psychological Association Award, and the San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools STEP Board Award, and advanced to the 2022 Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair.

His research project “Predicting the Onset of Depressive Disorders using Machine Learning” aimed to automate the process of identifying the onset of depressive disorders to help solve the mental health issues caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the Random Forest machine learning algorithm, a model was created with an accuracy of 84.29%. This model was then integrated into an app called Let's Heal, which allows the users to answer 25 questions and receive their prediction based on the model, along with interpretable information on how to proceed with the predictions.

He was also selected to advance to the 2021 Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair.

His research project “Quantifying Census Tract Level COVID-19 Vulnerability and Risk using Computational Methods” aims to identify the most vulnerable US communities based on the COVID-19 so the distribution of limited resources can be prioritized to improve the effectiveness of pandemic response and reduce the number of cases and deaths. The results show that the model is about 86% accurate nationwide, demonstrating that the model is a viable option for use by state and local health authorities when creating plans to distribute critical medical supplies. ArcGIS Pro was used to publish maps for high risk tracts, high risk counties, predicted death rate and the accuracy of the prediction.
